Shelford Board of Governors
ARCHDEACON PHILIP NEWMAN, OAM
Philip was born in Melbourne, and educated at Melbourne Grammar. His first job was as a teacher with the Education Department. He trained for the Ordained Ministry in London and was ordained into the Diocese of Melbourne almost 40 years ago. He has spent almost all his ministry in parishes here. He became an archdeacon - a priest with territorial and administrative responsibilities in the Diocese, as well serving in a parish - some 22 years ago. It was when he was appointed Vicar of St. John's Toorak and Archdeacon of Malvern that he came into contact with Shelford and St Mary's. This was in 1989, when Miss Elizabeth Britten was Principal. However, prior to that he had begun a long and rewarding association with girls' schools. Over 20 years ago he was elected to the Melbourne Girls' Grammar Council, the school his daughter attended, on which he served for five or six years. When he went to St John's Toorak, he was an ex officio member of St Catherine's School Council, on which he remained for sixteen years, much of that time as a member of the Executive and Chair of the Building and Property Committee. During more than 20 years on girls' schools' councils he has become a passionate believer in and advocate for girls' schools, and especially smaller schools, as the way by which many girls attain their scholastic potential and personal development, and escape stereotypical expectations and attitudes.
Philip regards it as a particular privilege to serve a School with such a distinguished history of achievement, and particularly one with such a close association with one of the parishes in his archdeaconry. One of the goals of the Diocese is to 'encourage active participation' between the parishes and schools, and Philip hopes that he may be able to facilitate that.
