Shelford Rowing

Shelford Boat Club

Shelford has been represented in rowing since 1993, with the Shelford Boat Club established in 2004. Rowing develops physical fitness, self-confidence and strong character. It's a sport that demands excellent organisation and teamwork as well as individual accountability. More than anything, rowing is about contribution and commitment, with every girl striving to achieve the best she can within the dynamics of her crew. While there's no doubt that rowing is amongst the most physically and mentally demanding of sports, it's also incredibly rewarding, and at Shelford we are very focused on assisting every girl to achieve her personal best. Our program is rigorous but balanced - a mix of skills development, strength and fitness training, competition and importantly, fun.

Our Program

Rowing is offered to students from Years 9 to 12. As the pre-season begins in Term 3, girls are introduced to the sport in Year 8. Two 'come and try' sessions are held at the start of the season. There is no cost for these sessions.

We row out of the Albert Park South Melbourne Rowing Club, and training occurs both at Albert Park and at the Shelford campus. The girls are selected into crews and each crew is allocated a coach.

During the season two training camps are held - a four-day non-residential camp in Melbourne in December (after classes have finished for the year), and a five-day residential camp in Geelong during the second last week of the January school holidays.

We compete in a number of regattas during the season, culminating at the Head of Schoolgirls' Regatta held in March at Geelong. Other regattas are held at Geelong, Carrum, Ballarat and Nagambie. Parents are responsible for transporting students to and from the regattas in most instances, and are encouraged to attend and cheer on the girls!

The cost of the training camps and Head of Schoolgirls' Regatta accommodation is included in the rowing fees.
