International Women's Day

Celebration of IWD is an English Faculty initiative. A typical example of this celebration involved a focus on the topic of Identity. All Senior School students were invited to create a postcard which included the empowering statement, "As a woman I will...." The Year Nine students also created posters. Shelford acknowledged IWD with green, white and purple balloons welcoming students to school, and vibrant posters to increase awareness of the many issues that were raised. Two of our highly talented students enriched the School Assembly with their fine performances. Emma sensitively played Ballarde, and unaccompanied, Dushy soulfully sang Here's Where I Stand. Our guest speaker, Sherene Hassan, from The Islamic Council of Victoria, was warmly welcomed and thanked by our Year Nine Co-Captains. Sherene captivated the school community as she spoke simply and movingly of her experiences as a female Muslim growing up, teaching and mothering in Australia. The rousing applause from the students indicated that Sherene's presence, and address, had made this event memorable.
