DISCIPLINE AREAS: LOTE

French

The study of French starts in Year 7. It is compulsory for two years and then becomes an elective. We have a special French room and it has a café area outside which is used for rehearsals and presentations. Junior classes are also held in the computer laboratories where the girls use interactive language programs.
Each year girls participate in cultural activities such as drama workshops (in French), games of boules, cooking, and visits to see French artists' work, films and theatre productions.

French LOTEIn 2006, the Accelerated Integrated Method of teaching French was introduced. The Program is called "Histoires en action!" This program has proven to be a revolutionary new approach to second language acquisition. Devised in Canada, it is being used increasingly in Australian schools, and is based on the use of stories and music. It is well suited to learners of all styles and the range of motivating activities help students to develop confidence in their ability to communicate in French. Shelford has organised study tours to France in 2001, 2004 and 2007. The trips consisted of sightseeing in and around Paris, an exploration of different areas of France which have historical and artistic significance, participation in the official ANZAC Day services and a period of homestay with families from our sister school, the Lycée Beauregard, which is in the Rhône Alpes district. Each year some of our students spend time over the summer break at school in France, and some of our sister school students visit Shelford and stay in Melbourne in July and August.
