Years 7 and 8

Years 7 and 8 are an exciting and dynamic time. Students transition into secondary school, enjoying broader learning experiences, and moving into mastering skills and knowledge while having opportunities to develop new interests and pursue their passions. At both Years 7 and 8, students will enjoy the core subjects of English, Humanities, Science and Mathematics.

Year 7: transitioning to secondary school

Our Integr8 Transition Program ensures students and parents feel a part of the year level before they even begin Year 7, and this feeling of community extends throughout the middle years.

The programs and focus on wellbeing at Year 7 enable our girls to find friends, work together and explore a range of learning areas and other opportunities. Students are encouraged to become more independent, resourceful and organised. They are challenged in their thinking while learning key content and skills.

The Year 7 learning program is deliberately broad, offering students a range of experiences so they can begin to learn about their passions, strengths and learning preferences. In addition to the core subjects students also study:

  • Drama
  • French
  • Health and Nutrition
  • Japanese
  • Music
  • Physical Education
  • Visual Arts

Year 8: consolidating foundations and interests

In Year 8 students continue to grow in key subject areas with the academic program evolving in line with their development. There is greater emphasis on critical and creative thinking and on student agency, along with a need for more responsibility and a greater volume of work.

The Year 8 curriculum fosters opportunities for students to take calculated risks and try studies they may not have otherwise attempted. In addition to the core subjects students also study:

  • Drama
  • Health and Nutrition
  • Music
  • Physical Education
  • Visual Arts

Year 8 students have the choice to either continue a study of two languages, French and Japanese, or to study one Language and the Year 8 breadth subjects – Theatre Production and Multimedia Communication.

Middle Years Coordinator

Shelford has a Middle Years Coordinator who oversees the academic and pastoral development of all Years 7 and 8 students, as well as classes, activities and programs. This provides continuity in supporting each student’s progress and wellbeing in the Middle Years.

Quærite Wellbeing Program

Our Year 7 and 8 students participate in the Quærite Wellbeing Program, a wellbeing and personal development program that operates throughout the whole school.

End of Year Program

Students from Years 5–8 work together in this themed program to add depth and richness to their learning. This biennial program occurs at the end of Term 4 and encourages creativity, collaboration and communication within the cross-curricular framework of Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics in one year and Languages, Performing Arts, English and Humanities in the alternate year.

Careers

From Year 7 students participate in the Career 4sight Program, with a focus on identifying their passions, skills and interests in Years 7 and 8.
